John Summers (1845-1884) was a mineral water manufacturer who ran the Bristol-based mineral water company W. Summers & Co.
Summers was born in St Pauls, Bristol, on the 14th of August 1845. His father, William Summers, was a successful mineral water manufacturer from London, who co-owned the Bristol-based company Roughsedge & Summers; his mother, Maria, was from Warminster. By 1851, the Summers family was living 23 Wellington Place, Ashley Road, in St Pauls, and by 1861 they were living a few doors down at Grafton House, 13 Wellington Place.
In 1871, Summers, who was then 25, was still living with his parents, at their new home at 12 Oakland Villas, Westbury upon Trym, on the outskirts of Bristol. By this point, he was working with his father at W. Summers & Co. The following year, he married a local woman named Catherine Laverton, with whom he went on to six children. Summers’ father died in 1876, leaving him and his brother Augustus as heirs to their father’s substantial inheritance and mineral water company.
Summers died on 11th the October 1884 at 11 All Saints Road, Clifton, leaving his brother in charge of the business.
