Francis Antonius Cotterell (1859-1928) was a managing director of Brooke & Prudencio Ltd. between 1889 and 1921.
Cotterell was born in 1859, at Avon Side Cottage, in Saltford, Somerset. His father, Joseph Francis Cotterell, was a mineral water manufacturer, who worked for Withy & Co. of Bath. His mother, Antonio Stuart Prudencio, was from Bath. His uncle, Francisco Prudencio, was a mineral water manufacturer, who worked with his father in the 1870s.
By 1871, Cotterell was attending a Church of England boarding school on Hill Road, Clevedon, North Somerset, but by 1881, he had returned to his parent’s new home on Crescent Road, in Newport, South Wales. By this date, he was working as a commercial clerk and engineer.
In 1887, he married Martha John from Llanboidy in Carmarthenshire, with whom he had two daughters and two sons; both of whom saw active service in the First World War.
In 1889, Cotterell became one of the four managing directors of his uncle’s newly founded mineral water company Brooke & Prudencio Ltd.; a position he retained until the company went into voluntary liquidation in 1921.
By 1891, Cotterell and his family had moved to 47 Chesterfield Road, in the St Andrews district of Bristol, where he remained until his death on the 18th of March 1928.
